Growing into the words we speak

Of course, it is not easy to learn to pray well.  And that is why we do well to imitate those who have prayed before us.  So we say prayers whose words we may not even well understand because in the saying we discover that we have become part of an understanding we can only later make our own. -Hauerwas and Willimon, Where Resident Aliens Live

I think the same reasoning is a compelling reason to include children in devotional practices that are not always accommodated to youth.
