Every Mother’s Day, I know more people who have sadness mixed into Mother’s Day- people who have lost a mother, mothers who have lost a child, mothers for whom parenting has looked very different than anticipated, women who know the heartache of infertility. It’s really the most heart-wrenching holiday.
The grief stirred by this day reflects just how important mothers are. While we grieve the limits of our mothers or our mothering, we can rejoice that the God who gave the world the good gift of motherhood has even better things in store, things that death and disease and failure won’t taint. So, we honor our mothers and long for our ultimate adoption as sons (Romans 8:23). Happy Mother’s Day, even if you’re feeling sad.
