A secret I don’t mind knowing

I started volunteering with youth group about the same time I started teaching.  I got lots of guidance, reminders, written standards, etc. about the confidential information I’d be hearing from youth.  But nobody prepared me for all the secrets that I would hear from my students or accidentally figure out by being around them.  I know way more about my students’ families than any emotional healthy person should want to know about anyone.  Sometimes, though, the family secrets aren’t too bad, like this nugget of gossip that was shared at snack time:

“My dad calls jelly beans jelly bellies because if you eat too many, you get fat.  He got his own jelly bellies for his birthday.  Sometimes he shares them with us.  But one time, Mom got some of his jelly bellies for us without asking him.”
