How to kill gossip with a single sentence

I was the odd one out in a group once, and someone’s name came up.  Everyone else knew him, and their talk immediately started slanting toward gossip about one quirky thing in his life.  Then the oldest, wisest man of the group said, “You know, J and I have a lot in common.”  Gossip stopped dead in its tracks, turned, and ran.  I use that line all the time.
